COSTS SUMMARY

Known Actual Costs

No known costs for this incident.

Estimated Costs

Ponemon Institute Direct Costs Estimate 1 $18,840,000.00
  1. Note that these estimates are based on the Ponemon Institute's 2009 direct costs figures from their 2009 Annual Study: Cost of a Data Breach. We multiply $60.00 by the number of records to obtain this figure. Keep in mind that depending on the breach, the direct costs are not always suffered by the breached organizations. In the case of credit card number breaches, the direct costs can often be suffered by banks and card issuers. Also note that this is only an estimate.

Anheuser-Busch notifies the Michigan Attorney General on 7-21-2008 of a burglary that occurred in one of its offices located in Sunset Hills, MO sometime between 6-6-2008 and 6-9-2008. During this burglary, a password protected and encrypted information laptop was stolen containing the PII of approximately 502 Michigan residents. This information was also reported to the police, the three major credit reporting agencies (TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax), along with notification to be sent to members who may be affected - to be mailed to them - during the week of 7-21-2008. To date, there is no evidence to suggest that the stolen information led to any identity theft, however, several measures have been taken to mitigate the risk including (a) additional enhanced security measures at the company, (b) additional quality controls, (c) Equifax monitoring for one year, (d) information provided to alleged clients of enrollment information, fraud alerts, and security freezes, and how to obtain a free credit report in their efforts to avoid similar incidents in the future.
