Thief nabs OU-C hard drive with social security information

   More than 30 Ohio University-Chillicothe current and former wellness center
   members social security numbers have been stolen.
   The information of 38 people was taken when an external computer hard drive
   was discovered missing Dec. 9. The information was maintained on a single,
   stand-alone computer utilizing specialized software. Without the specialized
   software, it would be difficult to read the information, according to the
   university.
   There is no indication the information has been used by anyone or otherwise
   compromised, however the university is offering affected individuals credit
   monitoring service with Equifax for one year at no cost.
   We apologize for any trouble and inconvenience this may have caused and are
   taking steps to address this situation, OU-C Dean Richard Bebee said.
   After the external hard drive, which was used as a back-up data-storage
   measure, was discovered missing, the university reported it took steps to
   determine the actual information on that device, and OU-C officials worked
   with information technology security experts at the university. Updated
   university policy dictates that Social Security numbers are no longer
   collected for identification purposes.
   Anyone who thinks he/she has been a victim of fraud should locate the local
   law enforcement agency.
   Individuals with further questions are asked to call OU-C at 774-7200 during
   business hours. Please note that the university will be closed for the
   holidays Thursday and Friday as well as Jan. 1.
