An unencrypted disk containing the name, address and super fund tax file numbers for 3122 trustees went missing last month when a courier failed to deliver it to the tax office. The office could not comment on why the CD was not encrypted or whether it intended to stop the practice in favour of transferring information over secure networks. The Australian Government Information Management Office said there were no Government-wide guidelines on transferring information and that it was up to each individual agency to decide the appropriate method to do this. "Decisions on how best to transfer data on a day-to-day operational basis remain the province of individual agencies," AGIMO spokesman Wayne Cooper said. "While there are secure networks available to agencies, in some circumstances it may still be more appropriate to transfer that information by other means." Privacy Commissioner Karen Curtis is not investigating the ATO's case further, and added that any investigations would be carried out in private. The Tax Office was notified about the missing CD on October 3 but only sent out letters to the victims on October 24, offering to re-issue the tax file numbers for their super funds.
